Signs And Wonders Draw Attention To Gospel Message
When no one will listen to Rob and his team share the gospel at a train station in Kuala Lumpur, the team resorted to singing and praising God. A pretty astounding thing happened when they uniformly began to shout: "Jesus Reigns" - it suddenly commanded the attention of many to the Gospel they were proclaiming.
At the Bangkok train station, I once picked up a very energized outreach team from Singapore. As I helped them load their bags into the truck, they told me what had just happened to them. Their train had stopped for several hours in Kuala Lumpur, and they had decided to make the most of their time. They began performing skits and trying to reach out to people in the middle of that booming railway station. But no matter how earnest they were, no one was interested in talking with them. They even got the stiff shoulder from people who were waiting around with nothing to do.
Rob, the team leader, told me what had happened next. "Art, you know how you always say that when all else fails, just start singing God's praises? Well, I gathered the team together and suggested that we pull out the guitar and just focus on Jesus, singing songs of worship to Him. We were singing "Our God Reigns," and I told the team that when we got to the end of the chorus, I would count to three and then we should all shout out that Jesus reigns."
The rest of the story was pretty astounding, but there were certainly enough witnesses to testify to it. Rob told me that when he counted to three and the team began to shout, all the electricity in the railway station shut down. In the cavernous silence of that blinded railway station, all that anyone could hear was "Jesus reigns!" echoing throughout the terminal. Then, as abruptly as it had shut off, the electricity came back on.
All eyes were now focused on the outreach team. Scores of people asked them who was this Jesus, who had the power to shut down one of the world's busiest train stations. The team was able to minister to a number of broken, hurting people and see them radically changed through the power of Jesus.
