Hudson Taylor found great freedom and lightness of heart once he obeyed the words of Jesus to give to him who asks. At first, out of fear for his own needs, he resisted giving. But once he obeyed, he said that “the joy all came back in full flood tide to my heart.”
Doctor loans patient $75 when the Holy Spirit reminded him of the command to give to the one who begs of you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. Patient is led to Christ by another patient because he could afford to stay longer. (Several pages later, the man tells the doctor that the mere fact he would loan a stranger $75 convinced him of the reality of Christ.)
Rees Howells learned to love the unlovely ones as God used Matthew 5:40-42 to open his eyes to the plight of the homeless.
